If we consider the presence of urban and morphological primary elements, we can say that Pavia is a typical medium-sized city in northern Italy. In this town there is a river, so there are bridges; there are towers, there is a castle, there are walls and bastions, there is an ancient university with its many halls of residence, there are research centers, and there is also an airport, or rather a former seaplane base built in 1926 during the fascist regime.
Humidity and water are among the main features of the city. During autumn and winter the city is submerged in fog, while in summer it is infested with mosquitoes. Water is the necessary element for the production of typical local products: the rice is cultivated in paddy fields that are flooded with a thin layer of water, and the famous "paradise cake" requires a lot of water to be drunk in order for it to be ingested.
Pavia is a city of Roman foundations, charged with a historical identity without which it cannot exist. The city center is an active place in the traditional manner of the provincial cities, while in the intermediate areas between the center and the suburbs there are many industrial and military building complexes completely abandoned. Pavia is a city in slow development as is demonstrated by the large construction sites, some of which are shuttered and others completed.
In the historical dimension of the city the "genius loci" survives against the evolving functional structures and confers an indelible character on the city and the landscape through different urban phenomena, providing a unique and recognizable experience. However, the contemporary dimension of the city requires a continuous updating of collective topics and public spaces, considering that new contents, new meanings and new values are assigned to the historical forms by people who live and pass through these places. Pavia therefore exists in the balance between the genius loci and the zeitgeist. The purpose of this ongoing project is to show a portrait of the city through a series of partial visions of the urban spaces, places and elements that compose the landscape, allowing a reading of the architecture of the city and the territory as if it were a text that tells many stories, readable as a whole as well as in individual parts.
